Reviving "Yellow" Music: Salacious Shanghai Songs

Event Type: Lecture
Facility: Fine Arts Hall (FAH)
Presented By: School of Music
Description:
Guest speaker Eric Hung presents 'Reviving "Yellow" Music: Salacious Shanghai Songs in 21st-century: A lecture/performance based on popular songs from 1930s "Jazz Age" Shanghai.
These songs are hybrids that blend elements of big band, Chinese opera, Western classical music, and Chinese folk music. They serve as the perfect representation of the cosmopolitan and dangerous
nature of 1930s Shanghai. The performance will include three arrangements of "Shanghai Nights," the most famous song of this repertory.

Eric Hung is an associate professor at Rider University. His research interests include the Asian-American experience and film music.
