Event Information:  Steinway Piano Series presents Irish pianist Cathal Breslin Sunday, January 13, 4pm, USF School of Music Recital Hall Program: Johannes Brahms: Six Klavierstucke Op.118 Sergei Rachmaninov: Etude-tableau in E flat minor Op.39 No.5 Olivier Messiaen: Ile de feu I and II (from Quatre Etudes) ***Intermission*** Sergei Prokofiev: Sonata no.4 in C minor Op.29 (D'apres des vieux cahiers) Franz Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody no.12 in c sharp minor Cathal Breslin was born in Northern Ireland. He has performed to great critical acclaim throughout Europe, U.S.A. and Asia, working under prestigious conductors such as Vladimir Altschuler, Christian Gansch, Niklas Willen, Barry Douglas, Giovanni Battista Rigon and Gearoid Grant, with orchestras including the Turin Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, BBC Ulster Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, and National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Recent Concerto performances have included Beethoven Concertos 2 and 4, Prokofiev Concertos 1 and 2, Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody, Mozart Concertos K467 and K488 , in venues such as the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland, the Palau de la Musica in Valencia, Spain, and the Teatro Civico in Vercelli (Milan), Italy . Recent recitals have been in Italy and Spain, California, Michigan, and Ohio in the U.S., and throughout Ireland and the U.K. His performances worldwide have been critically acclaimed as with “superb instenisty and passion”, “a real Artist”, “a truly engaging musical personality”, “a wonderful range of colors and understanding of this music, both impressive and so exciting”. International Piano Competition successes have included the Bronze Medal at the Viotti Competition (World Federation), the Gold Medal at the Carlet Competition in Spain, the Silver Medal at the Grand Konzerteum Competition in Greece, the Fourth Prize at the Iowa Competition in the USA, and two special prizes in the AXA Dublin Competition in Ireland. Cathal has broadcast regularly for BBC, RTE and RTVE Radio, and performed for TV in Japan, Spain and Ireland. His Mozart recording for E BU has been broadcast in over 29 countries on National Radio Stations, including ABC in Australia and NPR in U.S. Other releases have included a CD with Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody in 2005, and the DVD “Cathal Breslin: Live in Concert” in 2007. Studies began at the Royal College in London with John Barstow, continued at the Royal Northern College with Kathryn Stott and Benjamin Frith, and finally in Madrid with Joaquin Soriano. Cathal is also a Fulbright Scholar and a Bank of Ireland Millennium Scholar.
