USF Faculty and Guest Recital: Project GUT

Event Type: Music
Facility: School of Music (MUS)
Presented By: School of Music
Description:
Gut is a Korean ritual performed by shamans acting as a mediator between the present and past, communicating with ancestors and descendants. The shamans interact with the deceased through different phases: Summoning their spirits, listening and praying to them, and celebrating life with the living in attendance. Each phase involves a variety of songs, dances, ensemble playing using traditional instruments, and other performing arts practices.
Reimagining the ritual, contemplating the meaning of life and death, the program presents music by Dorothy Hindman, Robert McClure, Soobin Lee, Sangbin Rhie, Youshin Gim, Seokmin Mun, Emily Koh, Tyler Kline, and more. The works are written for soprano Jamie Jordan, percussionists, Zach Hale, Kevin von Kampen, Robert McCormick, pianist Eunmi Ko, and saxophonist Katherine Weintraub.
