Navigating the Future

The purpose of this Symposium is to gather researchers, scholars, and/or practitioners in music
education to share research with the potential to positively impact the future course of the profession.
Therefore, the submission of abstracts and proposals for projects dealing with topics that might help
guide the profession is encouraged. The Symposium welcomes international and interdisciplinary
presentations that support the mission of the Center for Music Education Research (CMER) at the
University of South Florida, including empirical, theoretical, philosophical, psychological, and
ethnograpic perspectives in all types of music teaching and learning contexts.
Symposium topics include, but are not limited to:
curricular innovation centered on musical creativity.
role of technology in the facilitation of musical creativity.
application and assessment of current learning theories.
vernacular musicianship in music teacher education.
examples of innovative curricula in music teacher education.
use of newly emerging methodologies such as narrative inquiry.
cultural psychology perspectives on music education.
Research to Practice-
efforts to connect research to practice.
In order to prompt action surrounding the topics of the Symposium as they relate to the future of
music education, the conference committee encourages the submission of panel presentations
dealing with topics related to the conference theme. The organizers hope that the result of these
discussions will lead to various projects that will have a life after the Symposium is completed.
Members of the Center for Music Education Research at the University of South Florida hope to then
provide structural and organizational support for these projects as strategies and plans for their
In conjunction with the main Symposium, there will be a research poster session aimed at graduate
student work. Please encourage your graduate students to submit proposals, as the focus of this
Symposium might prove to be beneficial to the development of their emerging research agendas.
Please specify your preference for spoken paper, panel, or poster presentation in your proposal
submission. Submissions for presentations or posters should provide a 250-word abstract. Panel
presentation submissions should include a 500 to 750-word proposal explaining how each author will
contribute to the presentation. Graduate students and those interested in a poster presentation
should submit a 250-word abstract for a specific research study that they have done, or are in the
process of doing.
All proposals will be blind-reviewed by an international review panel. Do not include author(s)’s name
or other identifying information in the proposal. In the body of the email include author(s)’s name,
affiliation, email address, and home or work address. Proposals should be submitted via email

‘Outstanding Emerging Researcher Award’
The Center for Music Education Research (CMER) is proud to offer up to two Outstanding Emerging
Researcher Awards, for spoken papers authored by early career researchers. The awards are
competitive and are awarded based on exemplary and innovative research projects that address the
mission statement of CMER.
Notification of acceptance will be made by October 31, 2012. Accepted abstracts will be printed in
the Symposium program. All presenters must be registered for the Symposium.

Refund Policy: There will be a full refund of registration, minus a $20 (USD) service fee, until November 16, 2012. There will be no refund of registration after November 16, 2012.
