Contemporary Traditional Turkish Ud Recital

Turkish music performed by N. Oya LEVENDOGLU ONER on the ud: a traditional Turkish instrument related to the lute and does not have frets. The program consists of newly composed traditional 
Turkish music pieces. Most of the composers are contemporary authorities in traditional Turkish music.

N. Oya LEVENDOGLU ONER is a Visiting Scholar at the School of Music at USF, from November 2010 to April 2011. She has performed the ud in recitals and concerts with various ensembles in and 
outside of Turkey.  

She premiered the Ud Koncertino composed by Munir Nurettin Beken in Cemal Resit Rey, one of 
Istanbul’s most famous concert halls, in 2005. It was the first ud concertino in Turkey and was part of a project titled "Melodies of Makam for Chamber Orkestra and Oud" and supported by Erciyes University. Her performances blended both traditional and modern styles. Her CD titled "Oya Levendogu'ndan Orkestra Esliginde Ud ve Makamsal Ezgilerimiz" has free excerpts available at

She has studied with renowned ud performers and pedagogues, such as Prof. Dr. Gülçin Yahya and Prof. Mutlu Torun. She graduated from the Music Education Department at Selcuk University in 1995 
and continued to pursue her master’s studies with Prof. Dr. Ayhan Zeren, who is known for the subjects of the science of sound and Turkish music theory. She began working at the Music 
Department, Fine Arts Faculty, at Erciyes University in 1996 and pursued a doctoral degree at Gazi University from 1998 to 2002 with Prof. Dr. Cihat Can. Her dissertation title was "Makams from the 8th 
Century On and Their Evolutions." She continued to work at Erciyes University as Assistant Professor (2003) and Associate Professor (2006) in the field of musicology. She completed a two-year term as 
Interim Dean of the Fine Arts Faculty at Erciyes University before visiting USF.
