USF Wind Ensemble: A Star is Born |
Event Type: | | Music |
Facility: | | School of Music (MUS) |
Presented By: | | School of Music |
Description: | | The USF Wind Ensemble will be a featured band on the National Convention program of the
American Bandmasters Association, the most prestigious organization for wind conductors in the
world. This will occur on Wednesday, March 6, in the School of Music concert hall. A preview of the
program for that concert will be presented on March 3, entitled, "A Star is Born." The music featured
will represent some aspect of the emergence of an ensemble, a composition, a composer or a
performer to some kind of national-level recognition. Our program will feature SSgt. Matthew
Carmichael of Pershing’s Own Army Band performing the Saxophone Concerto by Ingolf Dahl. This
rarely heard composition has been deemed one of the true masterworks for the medium. Also to be
performed will be Korean Dances by an Asian composer Chang Su Kohn who has surged to the
forefront as an important new source of wind band music. The audience will be further entertained
with selections by Morton Gould, Frederick Speck, Karl King, and Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov. |
