Visiting Artist: Ryan Berg

Event Type: Lecture
Facility: Fine Arts Hall (FAH)
Presented By: School of Art & Art History
Description:
Ryan Berg is an artist based in Los Angeles, California. The work with his collaborators
in Glitter Chariot explores ideas of theatrical and cinematic melodrama through musical
performance, video work, drawings and sculpture. Berg says, "I want the work to make
melodrama physical." Performances often take the rich and syrupy image and tone of
classic country music and pop music and filter it through characters that tumble and
squirm through the sometimes connected and sometimes disjointed story lines the
songs take. With titles such as All That Heaven Will Allow, Ribbon of Darkness and
Why Have You Left That One You Left For Me, Berg's solo work and Glitter Chariot give
a nod to Douglas Sirk films and the songs of Lou Reed, Crystal Gayle, Elton John and
other combinations that spark connections about the intricacies of relationships and the
dramas within them. Recent shows include the 621 Gallery in Tallahassee and The
Front Gallery in New Orleans.

In addition to his solo work and Glitter Chariot, Ryan works in Los Angeles as a
production designer and director for television, music videos and commercials. His
most recent shows as designer include Childrens Hospital and NTSF:SD:SUV for Adult
Swim on Cartoon Network, Funny Or Die Presents for HBO, Wainy Days web series,
Ke$ha music video and American Idol promos. Directing credits include music videos
for Azure Ray, Orenda Fink, Haroula Rose and Japancakes.

Ryan received his BFA from the University of Georgia and his MFA from the University
of Washington. Formally, Ryan was an Assistant Professor at this very school, the
University of South Florida, and a guest lecturer at the University of Georgia and Cal
State Northridge.
