Wind Band Masterworks: Affirming the Old & Presenting the New
Award winning pianist Dharshini Tambiah will be the featured soloist on the Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble by Igor Stravinsky. Her performance will be one of several that will occur during the Gala season to demonstrate the wonderful tonal spectrum of the new Steinway concert grand piano.
The Stravinsky Piano Concerto is considered to be one of the earlier wind band masterworks. Even so, live performances of this composition are not commonly heard. Also included on the program will
be new work entitled, Popcopy by one of the nation’s rising young composers, Dr. Scott McAllister. The names of its movements provide insight into the spirit of the work. Movement one is entitled
“More Cowbell,” while the second and third movements are respectively identified as, “One Time at Band Camp,” and “Serenity Now.” Other significant wind band works will be included, some old and
some new with something perhaps that is middle-aged. Whatever the case, it will be an event you won’t want to miss if you are a lover of good music.
