USF Jazz Ensemble I

Event Type: Music
Facility: School of Music (MUS)
Presented By: School of Music
Description:
Distinguished Professor and composer Chuck Owen will offer a sneak peak into the creative process and inspiration behind his new CD release, River Runs in a "meet the composer" styled casual lecture in the USF School of Music Concert Hall on Wed. evening, April 17th, at 6:45 PM - immediately prior to the final USF Jazz Ensemble concert of the season. Composed under the auspices of a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, "River Runs", subtitled A Concerto for Jazz Guitar, Saxophone, & Orchestra, is a unique work that finds Owen's nationally feted professional jazz orchestra, the Jazz Surge, surrounded by a symphonic orchestra. Inspired by float trips down some of America's most scenic rivers, the work defies stylistic categorization; drawing not only from jazz traditions but classical, latin, and American folk/roots musics as well.

The USF Jazz Ensemble's performance follows immediate after (at 7:30) with a diverse program that includes an arrangement of Owen's as well as the premier of several compositions from USF students.

The USF Jazz Ensemble will perform it's final program of the year featuring new works composed by students in the Ensemble as well as from the Jazz program. Other works featured will be from the
pens of Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Darci Argu, Kim Richmond, John Hollenbeck, and our very USF's own Chuck Owen. Do not miss one of the top Jazz Ensembles in the country.
