Kotler Award Presentation: Dameun Strange |
Event Type: | | Music |
Facility: | | School of Music (MUS) |
Presented By: | | School of Music |
Description: | | Her Vortex Machete is Dameun Strange’s latest project under his AquaSonos series, a series which explores human relationship with water and storytelling using Afroturist philosophy and aesthetics. Her
Vortex Machete is inspired by Black Atlantic folklore and stories of water, sea, and storm deities, as well as indigenous practices as a means of "sur-thrival" in the age of increased and rapid climate
change. Strange utilizes field recordings and other prepared media as an environmental foundation, over which soundmakers and movers are asked to improvise using a graphic score and conduction
to build a story of shifting our relationship with nature from one of extraction and hoarding to one with cooperation and balance.
Dameun Strange (he/him), is the College of Design, Art, and Performance 2025 Kotler Fund Artist. He
is a sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, and award-winning composer of conceptual electronic and improvised electro-acoustic works focusing on the African diaspora's stories and themes, often
exploring surrealist and afro-futurist ideas with unique impressionism. He believes that theater is a modality that can connect to people of any age, any background. Theater is a place for wild
imaginings and untold stories to thrive. |
